YabaiDict is a Japanese slang dictionary made for English speakers who want to actually understand how Japanese is spoken today — not just what the textbooks say.
Every entry is written and reviewed by native Japanese speakers living in Japan. We explain when a word is used, how it sounds, who uses it, and what kind of reaction you'll get if you try it yourself.
Most "Japanese slang" content on the internet is outdated, machine-translated, or missing the real nuance. You'll find lists of words with dictionary-style definitions — but no one tells you that using that word will make you sound like someone's dad, or that it's only used sarcastically online.
We wanted a resource that's honest, current, and actually useful. If a word is dying out, we'll say so. If it'll get you weird looks, we'll warn you. That's what YabaiDict is for.
Each entry goes through a multi-step process. First, a draft is written with native-level knowledge of the word's usage, connotations, and history. Then it's reviewed by a separate native speaker who checks accuracy, nuance, and tone. Only after passing review does an entry go live.
We include real example sentences — the kind of thing you'd actually hear in a convenience store in Shibuya, not something generated by a language model.
Questions, corrections, or suggestions? We'd love to hear from you.
